The Poetry of Nashville

Welcome to The Poetry of Nashville hosted by David Weir. The poems here are written by me. Here, you will find poems about Music City that come alive with the art, flavor and beauty of one of the most remarkable cities in the world. Nashville has some of the greatest writers anywhere! It’s a great city to live in! And I enjoy the work of other poets just as much as my own and I would love to hear from other writers about their poetry! So let the poetry begin!

I was just taking a walk down the new sidewalk on Harding Rd and I thought of this poem. Here it is, it’s called “I Can Try. ” I hope you enjoy it.

                       I Can Try

We live in a harsh world

Where sadness is all around us

Where broken dreams litter the ground

And where disappointments abound

But there is a light at tunnels end

Do you see it shining brightly?

Don’t give up just keep on going

Take one day at a time

All we can do is try

Try and try again in this cruel world

Despite the heartache and pain

One day you will see victory

One day our trying will pay off

Even if it never does

I can say at least I tried

At least I tried

It’s the trying that shapes us

It’s the trying that tests our steel

And one day when someone asks

How I reached my sweet success

I will say because I tried

Because I tried

The following poem I wrote after being inspired by the beauty of the willows at Centennial Park near downtown Nashville. So, here it is, I hope you enjoy it!

The Song of the Weeping Willow Tree

Upon that wind swept hill of grass

I see my life displayed as if in glass

My eyes follow its swaying bows

Full of sadness it does me show

Some parts high some parts low

The bulk of the weeping willow

Flows with the winds magical rhythm

And as my glossy eyes behold

This beautiful sight of nature’s show

Thoughts and memories from the past

Comes to my mind’s eye

Thoughts of my great loves

And memories of them that use to be

But here in nature you’ll find peace

Come dance with her loving presence

She will sooth your inner spirit

As you watch her green leaves move

She will lift your burden friend

Embrace her like a loved one

For she is love blessing our nature

And she wants to carry away your pain

Let her lift you to a higher plain

For this is why this tree exists

Come, come to where true love abides

Come and partake in her loving song

She is always ready to welcome you in

Let her leafy arms love you friend

Do you see her weeping my friend?

Her tears are endless in this world

She weeps for those who are lonely

But she can sooth your inner spirit

Her green, leafy arms reach out for you

Her soul yearns to touch your spirit

And blanket you in her blissful love

See her dancing with the loving winds

Do you hear her calling out for you?

Her joyful song can be heard

All over this beautiful world

So come to where her love abides

Come, come and sing along with her

Enter into her paradise far from woe

She dances to the rhythm of nature

She dances to your inner song

Her bushy mass moves with the wind

Her many leaves rustle with bliss

She reaches for you so gently

Feel her softly touch your rosy cheeks

Come and dance with her branches

Come and let your spirit be free

She is a beacon of hope and love

She is a lighthouse guiding you in

Her branches are green and beautiful

They move with the rhythm of life

Feel her tugging gently on your heart

Can you sense her love inside of you?

Can you feel her love my friend?

A willow’ s love is for all of us

She yearns to comfort the downtrodden

She wants to welcome us all in

She knows sorrow and pain

This willow understands your anguish

Come to where her love does not judge

Come find peace under her shade

Here in nature’s blissful love

Will your inner pain go away

Dance with the willows leafy branches

Embrace her with your calloused hands

Like her roots searching for life’s water

So you are here to find her love

Enter into her realm of wonderful joy

And sing along with her as one

It is time for you to know love again

It is time to hear her loving song

She sings like a chorus of angels

Her song is heard around the world

She lives in our hearts and imagination

She lives in the vast woods and forests

This weeping willow lives in us all

This sad tree wants to give you joy

Come to where her spirit lives on

Come to the great outdoors my friend

She is brave and full of splendor

The willow can withstand any storm

She is a statue standing for what is right

The weeping tree is a beautiful sight

So sing that song with her my friend

The song of the Weeping Willow Tree

The next poem I was inspired to create when I was near Percy Priest Lake in east Nashville. The large expanse of water with the sunlight sparkling off of its surface was a spectacular sight to behold. So, here it is. I hope you enjoy my poem,”The Distant Shore!” Please visit
